The Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church (EMBC) Historically Black Colleges and Universities Tour is a biennial visit to historic institutions of learning. Our objective is to inspire 9th–12th grade students to pursue a college education by providing direct exposure to the unique academic and social environments found at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
In 1999, EMBC successfully launched its inaugural HBCU tour, fulfilling a vision to move beyond the four walls of the church and serve the youth of the Colorado Springs community. That first year, 44 excited students and their chaperones embarked on a seven-day journey to visit six HBCUs. This dream was made a reality through the combined efforts of local organizational support, sponsorships and a series of dedicated community fundraisers led by the students and chaperones.
Our legacy of exploration continues to grow. To date, we have introduced students to the rich traditions of the DMV & Virginia: Howard, Hampton, Norfolk State, Morgan State and Virginia. The Carolinas: North Carolina Central, Winston-Salem State, and North Carolina A&T. The Atlanta University Center: Spelman, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, and Morris Brown. The deep South: Tuskegee, Alabama State, Florida A&M, Bennett, Tennessee State, Fisk and many more.
Our tours have consistently empowered college-bound students with a deeper understanding of the requirements for admissions and the tools needed to succeed in a higher education environment, with the vast majority successfully enrolling in college and going on to build rewarding and impactful careers. We are proud to share that over 70 of our alumni have attended an HBCU, with majority receiving scholarships to support their academic success.
All our tours have resulted in college-bound students gaining a better understanding of what is required to attend and succeed in a college environment and most attend college.
The next biennial tour is scheduled for October 2027. For $1,350, students receive a full-service experience including round-trip airfare from Colorado Springs or Denver, charter ground transportation, and an 8-night hotel stay. The registration covers three meals a day, official tour apparel (jacket and t-shirt), guided campus tours, historical site visits, and an unforgettable experience of an HBCU Homecoming football game and many more.
